There's a phenomenon in web design known as "banner blindness". Users simply don't see banner ads most of the time because they've learned to filter them out. Interestingly we also filter out content that just looks a bit like a banner ad. I read one study that used eye tracking software on several hundred users given the task of finding the US population displayed on a government website. The text containing the figure was displayed in big red letters in a box, in a prominent position on the page. A majority of users failed to answer the question, and the eye tracking software showed that they had scanned the text columns, but spent very little time looking at the box.

The only time banners become noticeable to me is if one is being used aggressively on Google's ad network. Then I'll see an ad connected with something I've recently searched for for perhaps three months... on most of the sites I visit with Google network ads. Generally though, the advertisers don't use such aggressive techniques, and the only reason I noticed it the first time was because the ad was for the company I was working for.

Thing is, every WWII forum I'm on has them, so it wouldn't be a major shock. Anyway, if I announced it was the only way to keep it going I don't anybody would have a real problem with it. Reality does suck.

It might be better to select a few companies that would be relevant to your membership and approach them directly about advertising. You have a large number of guaranteed hits so it may be possible to get someone like Amazon to agree to pay up front for an exclusive advert.

As an aside, I had an interesting experience this morning as I arrived on a website - it blanked out, and a message came onto the screen which read, "You are using AdBlock - please turn off AdBlock to fully experience our site." They're on to us.

And of course, you immediately turned off AdBlock ... :tea:

There was something I wanted to see. When I'd seen it, AdBlock went back on. I didn't notice any ads in the time I was there.

I would definitely want to go with Amazon first off. I'll have to get some Google Analytics numbers first. :sigh: Do you have to pay for that? :thinks:

First I get the site back up to speed. Add more content to show I'm working it. Then talk to advertisers. However, if I find a new hosting site that will provide the space for free I would have to think seriously about banners at all.
