I've been waffling about doing this since July, but now I actually have the HDD out of Patrick's PC ready to install into the Gateway 6840. I haz a terror.

I asked before if you had a docking station or spare drive enclosure. 
EDIT: If it's the only drive attached to that interface, "Master" or "CS" (cable select) jumper settings should both work.
Are you sure your current PC can even support that old IDE interface? You won't fuck your machine up. Just make sure you set your boot sequence to your hdd in the bios. Slave and master settings don't matter any more.

Re the boot order: That's for the BIOS settings to worry about. If you had more than one such drive, it would be a different matter. Cable select, it's the auto setting for master/slave. Any IDE drive should work with any IDE connector.
