Free HTML editors are 10-a-penny - well, y'know.

As for avoiding a lot of auto-generated clutter: That's possible, if you choose the right product.

I tend to write very little static HTML myself though - most of it is generated at the back-end by ASP interfacing with an Oracle database.

I don't like the regex engine in Notepad++, it can't do multi-line stuff.

'Zilla may not be worried about that methinks.

I find Notepad++ to be generally very good, but the file compare feature (a plugin) is weak.

As it so happens, Microsoft made Microsoft Expression Web 4 freely available about a month ago:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=36179

Don't let the "web_trial_en.exe" file name mislead you. It's a full product, albeit not one that's like to be updated in the future. Microsoft has merged it into other products, and that's where future development will go.

I haven't installed or tested it yet myself, but it might well be one of those products that auto-generates a lot of clutter in terms of raw HTML.
