Charting the structure of a website, software?

Post by Gawdzilla Sama » Mon Apr 09, 2012 12:43 pm

I don't think I mentioned (much) that I've taken over Hyperwar. One of the challenges is to figure out where everything is, and where new stuff would go. Is there a program that would show me the structure of the site? Preferably something that would allow annotation and be searchable, but a graphic would be better than nothing. TIA

No response so far so I'll through my six pence worth in. Microsoft used to do (may still do as far as I know) a web creation prog called Frontpage. It had the option of displaying your web site pages in map format a bit like a flow diagram.

The program was otherwise a pig to use mind you!

So I should get something like Frontpage, but kosher? My other option it do it manually. Word has an org chart function I think.

Zilla, do you have access to the underlying file structure? Can you look directly at the directories / folders where the web page files reside, as a hierarchy?

Well looking around FP does appear to be pretty old hat now. It probably was not the most helpful tip, but your post looked kinda lonely there with no response!

Yeah, I'm actually downloading the whole site. It resides on a Unix box, if that matters at all.

You should have ftp access to the site if you have full control. An ftp client like filezilla will show the folder structure. Dreamweaver is a complete site management program

Be very fucking careful when touching the site via ftp because you can do a lot of damage very easily.

Frankly, I'd rather do the structure on my PC if at all possible. Can filezilla read a PC?
