"Free" DSL

Post by Jason » Fri Mar 02, 2012 12:40 pm

I see no one has left any pearls of wisdom in the semenary lately so I thought I'd share this semi-legal life hacking trick with y'all.

Things you need:
A 'proprietary' DSL router/modem (combo) - 2wire ones are the easiest it seems
A phone line still connected to the DSLAM (DSL link still connected though you don't have an account with the service provider)
An SSH tunnel

OK, we all hate telecommunication companies right? And we want to pirate and download IED blueprints without the fuzz busting in our door right? Well my piratey and/or terrorist friends, all you need is the three things above.

You see each 'proprietary' (the hardware isn't proprietary, but they have a hard factory set/reset that ties them to a particular service provider) modem/router combo will, when factory reset (which may happen when your DSL subscription is cancelled or you can do it yourself either through the html interface or the by using the manual reset button on the modem/router itself) the modem/router does an http redirect to the registration/login server of the programmed ISP not allowing you to browse the web or initiate download, such as the prints for that dirty bomb you so desperately need to keep nato out of your airspace. There is often, however, a nice little loophole the IT boys often forget to plug: you can still initiate SSH connections to remote servers! So what you ask? The world is now your oyster my friend. Using a program, such as Putty, setup a local proxy which will connect via a (encrypted - all SSH connections are encrypted.) to your remote proxy, configure your browser to use a proxy from the local port you set in putty, and BAM. Your http traffic is now rerouted through your SSH tunnel, encrypted, and all with no digital fingerprint (the service providers servers are the last point the data trail can be traced to, after that they'd have to monitor bandwidth usage to trace it to your line). Pretty cool huh? Yeah. Fuck you SOPA. This works from any line that is still connected to the DSLAM (which happens often because field techs are lazy and stupid  ) so you can jack in anywhere you find one with your 'hacked' modem so long as it is in the service area of the provider.

Only one problem with this plan. Even if it works, you'll still be using DSL.

It does work. I worked it out myself and tested it for over a month.. but I was just having a laugh. :P

It does require a bit of technical know-how.
