Yes and no. Yes, because you wouldn't expect it and it appears totally random. No, because there are a good list of things that induce a lot of cats to want to mark them based on smell and texture. These things include (but the list is not exhaustive):
(your two above)
damp towels, esp. if mildewed, or other mildewed linens
moldy stuff, esp. carpet/linens
throw rugs
suitcases*
bath mats
dirty laundry baskets or piles
(*this is an interesting one and might be explained twofold...)
I tend to classify all these things into MESSAGE TWO. Sometimes, they are part of MESSAGE THREE. So we'll touch on these a tiny bit soon!
