Since I don't know what spec it is (any basic computer model would have numerous sub-configurations), I'd guess between 100 to 150 $. Ballpark.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:How much would it cost to replace the current motherboard?

If it's the PSU, it's much easier. No mucking about with Windows drivers, etc.
What's the power rating on the current PSU?

Re: Computer go BOOM!
At this point, the smart money is on one of two things:
1. Adding the extra drive overloaded the PSU (older drives are much less efficient in terms of power consumption), but the rest of the electronics are fine. Modern PSUs should isolate the rest of the system from damage when they fail.
2. Whatever way you installed the drive buggered things up, but it may be recoverable.
If I were a betting man, I'd be looking at (1) right now.

I'm hoping it's "1" or maybe just a fuze on the motherboard. (Do they have fuzes on motherboards?)

They have, but I don't think I've ever known one to cause a problem. YMMV of course.Gawdzilla Sama wrote:I'm hoping it's "1" or maybe just a fuze on the motherboard. (Do they have fuzes on motherboards?)

When I pop the top I'll check to see. I learned to do that when I was in Sicily. Got a brand new boom box in the mail. I opened it up, set it on the counter and went out to my car. My roomie decided to jump the gun and plugged it in. It was a US boom box. You can imagine.

Yep. The fuzes were the glass cylinder type, common on American cars. I stole a couple out of a Navy pickup and got it running again. I also explained the terms of the Serviceman's Group Life Insurance policy to my roomie, with particular emphasis on "justifiable homicide".klr wrote:"Two nations separated by a common language different power system."Gawdzilla Sama wrote:When I pop the top I'll check to see. Re: Computer go BOOM!
Actually they do. Capacitors blow once in a blue moon with a loud "pop". I blew a cap on my mobo (the one I just finally replaced) a little over a year ago. 8 or 9 years before that I blew a cap on my Creative 5.1 soundcard - that one was a goodie as it scorched the area around it and left carbon scoring.Tyrannical wrote:Computers don't go BOOM! Actually, this was a Big Bang type 'boom'.
Re: Computer go BOOM!
Most likely your power supply cacked out on you. 40-60 will get you a cheap one though I don't recommend that. You'd best look at one in the neighbourhood of 150 - 600watts or more. Tech guy will sort you out for a modest fee + parts I'm sure.
It's unfeasible to me that any damage occurred to the rest of the system.. Most mobos have a big green LED to let you know they're getting power from the PSU so long as it is plugged in and the on/off switch on the back is switched to on. If it's off then your PSU is prolly fucked.

Re: Computer go BOOM!
I've just installed a silent PSU a couple of weeks ago. It isn't rocket science to wire a computer these days. If I can do it then anyone can...put the wires in the right holes and you are away.
