Not yet. I don't want them to pose for me. (And these last couple of tough-looking ladies have been carrying sharp implements.) With the 120-400, I'm usually too far away to get conversational, anyway.CJ wrote:Do you chat to the people you take photos of?

What is the general attitude of the locals to being photographed?FBM wrote:Not yet. I don't want them to pose for me. Don McCullin is a guy you should read about. Not only is he a great photographer he was very good with his subjects. I would think you would have a wonderful ability to get close and personal with your subjects. Now I may be crossing cultural issues but if I were you I would wander around with your camera slung around your neck but not ready for use. You're Caucasian but must be very rare in speaking Korean. Surly you could just wander up to people and start talking to them and once you have there confidence ask them if you can take photos, or would this be dumb?

No, not dumb, but difficult. Confucianism is still the thing here. It's hard to explain. Even if they would like it, they would have to refuse a couple of times first. I'm very awkward at repeating that sort of request 3 or 4 times, as it's pretty damn rude in Western culture. Maybe I'm just making excuses. I could do it. It would be most difficult with farmers and whatnot (they speak in VERY strong dialects and I can't keep up with them), but I'm pretty sure monks and nuns could be charmed into it. They're pretty laid back and open-minded (read: they would love the free advertisement for their temple). I'll work on it. In the meantime, I'll read up on this McCullin fella.CJ wrote:Don McCullin is a guy you should read about. Not only is he a great photographer he was very good with his subjects. ^^^ Brilliant
Technical note: The low end of the neck is over exposed and the detail 'burned out'. Under exposing the shot would have cured this (the camera takes an average guess at the exposure), look up Bracketing in your manual, find a small white object against a very dark back ground and see what it does. In the picture above the bird is the centre of attention so you notice the exposure issue. If the bird were correctly exposed and the dark water a little darker nobody would notice. The central object of a good picture should normally be that part of the image in focus and correctly exposed, except if a silhouette is intended.
