Re: Which camera do I want?
I love my Nikon - their DSLRs are great cameras but they are bringing out new models so fast that I can't comment on the model you showed.
I would recommend a much longer tele lens if you are looking at action shots of wolves (unless you are intending getting up close and personal) and definitely a tripod. I have a 55-200 and it is not really enough for some of the wildlife shots I want to take.

Perhaps a good bridge camera might be the way to go, then. They're certainly not short on image quality and 30x zoom would be more than adequate for such purposes, I would have thought - and it doesn't sound like you'll be needing to change lenses out.

I'll be within a few feet of the wolves most of the time, if you get too far back all you see is assholes and elbows, not the technique they're trying to capture. They told me to expect to have to shot twenty captures to get the frames for a three minute slide show with narration.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:I love my Nikon - their DSLRs are great cameras but they are bringing out new models so fast that I can't comment on the model you showed.

I have a cheapo tripod, but my key weapon will be my monopods, so I can "boom" the camera over the captures without being tripped over.
@ Jack. This is my main mission, but I do want to use it for every day use, so it should be as flexible as possible. That means changeable lens.

More like 200! I generally shoot dozens of action shots of birds in flight to get a single keeper. Maybe wolves are more willing to pose - but rapid fire auto is the way to go with most beasts.Gawdzilla wrote:They told me to expect to have to shot twenty captures to get the frames for a three minute slide show with narration.

I have always been partial to canon.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

It is impossible to give advice without knowing how much you have to spend.
“I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind. I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”

Say $600-$1,000. If the camera comes in at ~$700 the remainder would go for goodies.Pensioner wrote:It is impossible to give advice without knowing how much you have to spend.

Have not looked at these for a while. But a nice feature in action shots is to keep the camera powered all the time, no shutting down just as you are ready to shoot. So you need the camera in hand to see how easy that is. I don't want to program it every time I turn it on.

Check for power-down time option. Check.Tero wrote:Have not looked at these for a while. Re: Which camera do I want?
I would look at two things.
First, the interface. I like Cannon's interface but I bought a Nikon because the price was right.
Second, the local Craigslist. In your area, there should be plenty of used gear from both manufacturers. But you might notice one brand more than the other is more in circulation. This will come in handy down the road when you want to buy a lens collection.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
