Fly Fishing (by JR Hartley)
I'm staying in a caravan for a couple of days. I just found a rod and a load of flies in the cupboard. Apparently I can get a fishing license from a local shop. Anyone got any tips on fly fishing if I find a spare couple of hours to give it a go?

Get a really tiny rod.

Don't get the hook caught in the back of your head.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Practice without a fly on the line saves on tangles . mostly fly fishermen just beat the water ineffectually and the fish float to the top laughing ...

Jaysus, where do you start? Find out if it's a fly rod. Get a fly line. ( much thicker and more weighty than plain nylon monofilament. Tie the flies to the end of that with a metre of fine monofilament.
Casting a fly line is a flick back, pause till you feel the pull, then flick it forward.
Don't let the rod go past vertical on the back cast.
Draw the flies slowly back through the water towards you, by pulling a handful of line back.
And the golden rule "KEEP YOUR FLY IN THE WATER". You won't catch anything while it's in the air.

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Are you anywhere near a large-ish body of water? That always helped me.Pappa wrote:I'm staying in a caravan for a couple of days. I just found a rod and a load of flies in the cupboard. The fly-fishing magazines I usually see have the angler in waders in some mountain stream. Looks like too much work to me. I usually get a canoe or aluminum boat and go out on the lake. And beer. Duh. If you do get a hit, remember to reel it in with the rod-tip near the water surface, alternately pulling left and right. If you pull straight up and back, the fish will often be able to jump out of the water and shake, creating enough slack to spit the fly out.
