the second edition of the origin of species
the second edition of the origin of species
this is from John Avise's book the Case for Non-intelligent design
in the second edition of The Origin of Species, Darwin mentioned God explicitly in the concluding paragraph: There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one.
Also I'm not really in the mood for debate right now, I'm too focused on math, but I will be hopefully in another 6 months.

Those who are most effective at reproducing will reproduce. Therefore new species can arise by chance. Charles Darwin.

Re: the second edition of the origin of species
So why post this?
Darwin lived in an age of religion. It was all around him and part of the language and the culture. He didn't set out to be an atheist and it is not at all certain that it was just the realization of the implications of evolution that led him to agnosticism/atheism. The death of a child had something to do with it too.

Re: the second edition of the origin of species
Darwin's religiosity is irrelevant to the theory of evolution, especially 150+ years on.

Errrr.... so what? And it was the sixth edition, not the second.spinoza99 wrote:this is from John Avise's book the Case for Non-intelligent design

Even religious apologists know that's a red herring:
It is not helpful for creationists, or anyone else, to use Darwin’s reference to a Creator. Darwin himself later admitted that he truly regretted using that “Pentateuchal term,” when what he really meant was that things had “appeared by some wholly unknown process.” Creationists who have studied Darwin (and/or Darwinism) to any degree are well aware of the fact that Darwin later expressed regret for having included such references to a Creator in The Origin—which is why those of us at Apologetics Press do not employ Darwin’s reference to a Creator in our apologetics efforts.

Darwin wasn't an atheist, and evolution does not presuppose or necessitate a lack of a deity.spinoza99 wrote:this is from John Avise's book the Case for Non-intelligent design

Sorry to horn in here, but what difference does it make what Darwin believed in (or not)? It's not like anyone is claiming that he was omniscient.
