Why does it take hordes of sperm to soften an egg enough for one to get in?

The things one finds:
"So i am wrong in this, that i was taught RNA was the what the recombined DNA molecule was called when the sperm joined with the egg and began life."

I did correct him, he never responded.

The miracle of life!

Also, throw in some Hoyle type of statistics. One zillion sperm shoot out. One of them made you. To get all your features, the odds are one in a zillion. Go back 100 ancestors and the odds are one in 100 x zillion. You were nearly impossible to produce.

Many fundamentalists claim, from their special websites, that DNA is the same as DNA 50 million years ago
R. Morris - "But they will have the DNA of those 50 million year old ants."

Hate to tell you this R.Morris but insects trapped in amber do not contain DNA.

Although it was a great movie, 'Jurassic Park' was not a documentary.
They read stuff like this and go DNA!!!!!!!!!!!

Preaching to fundies again.

A good tip is to discard the opinions and rantings of scientists serving time for tax fraud, working on the payroll of the Heritage Foundation etc.

Darwinian "survival of the fittest" is greatly misunderstood. If a species produces just a few more offspring in its lifetime than a similar species in the same habitat, the loser will go extinct in that area in a short time. It may survive elsewhere. It's not like they kill each other.

Actual review for homeschooling about dinosaurs
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated guide to a biblical history of dinosaurs, July 10, 2013
By
Dustybug (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chronicles of Dinosauria (Hardcover)
As Christians who believe in a young earth and that dinosaurs coexisted with humans and were created on the 6th day along with the rest of the land animals, it can be difficult to find reading material that does not incorporate an evolutionary or an old earth viewpoint. To be honest, even though I became a Christian at the age of 9, I'd never really questioned the "facts" that I'd been taught throughout my public school education about dinosaurs and millions of year. I don't recall the church of my childhood having a particular stance on the issue, though I was so young, it is quite possible that I just don't remember.

Now that I've grown in my walk with the Lord, my beliefs have not only changed, but become quite solidified. When I teach my children about the creation of the world, I include dinosaurs with the other animals. I want them to be aware from a young age that not everything that is supposedly "scientifically proven" lines up with what we believe the Bible teaches. I've been collecting resources over the last few years and we have recently added a real gem to our collection.

Chronicles of Dinosauria: The History & Mystery of Dinosaurs and Man by Dave Woetzel is a vividly and beautifully illustrated volume containing a wealth of information about the great reptiles.

With eight chapters exploring everything from creation and fossil evidence to cryptozoology evidence and apologetics this book is filled, cover to cover, with facts, pictures, historical and biblical accounts and more.

Did you know that paleontologists have found many modern mammal types in the fossil layers WITH dinosaur types?

Have you ever thought about how many of the historical accounts of dragon sightings sound remarkably like dinosaurs?

Did you know that there is artwork from all over the world depicting dinosaur like creatures?

The most fascinating chapter in the book shares stories of dinosaur like creatures around the world, including the Loch Ness monster. If scientists still discover unknown animals in remote locations of the planet, why couldn't there still be some great sea serpent living in the depths of the water? As the back cover of the book says, "every legend includes a grain of truth."

The last chapters of the book show how we can trust that the Bible is true and provides its own evidence that dinosaurs walked on the earth WITH man, not millions of years before. Our family especially appreciated that all Scripture came from the King James Version of the Bible.

Along with all of the evidence presented, there are gorgeous illustrations by Richard Dobbs.
Lifelike and full of detail and color, even children who aren't quite ready for the reading level of this book will be captivated by these drawings. This would be a fabulous edition to any home library if you are looking for dinosaur resources that line up with a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis.

I don't know about other animals, but from a human point of view, it makes sense.

If a male can't make enough sperm, due to age, or some physical problem, then he might make an unsuitable father.
He might die rather sooner than one that produces a good volume of sperm.

Also, a fleeting quick mating with an uncommitted male might result in single parenthood, which would reduce the chances of the young making it to adulthood. Or, an attempted forced mating, by a male that the female didn't want as a mate, might introduce a small amount of sperm, and it would be better if that didn't result in a pregnancy.

All speculation of course.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

It's to do with the hominid past. There was mating all day as primates. Thus the more sperm you made the better the chance your sperm "won" that day. It also deals with timing of ovulation.

Meanwhile, we were discussing simple ordinary folk:
Me:There is generally a distrust of The Gubment. My dad had a man working for him in Florida who was barely literate. He could read lists of product and check off tables and boxes. I worked outdoors summers with him. I talked things with Donald while we sorted items to pack. He knew I went to college. He did not believe anything that came from a book! He was not dumb, he would quiz me about experiments I had done. If I had first hand experience on some matter, he would "take it into consideration." One day his car broke down and he quit. He found a job he could walk to. It took me and my dad 12 hours to do what he could do in 4 hours alone.

Back to the sperm. A somewhat confusing example is seen in birds. The female ovulates continuously until the nest is full. The males keep mating with her the whole time. The sperm are waiting for days for the next egg to come down. In some songbirds the male pokes at the female cloaca to drain it of previous sperm. I think Dunnock is one. Most of the eggs will be his, but usually in a nest there is 1 that isn't.
