My speculative explanation for why the dinosaur ancestors and some lizards became bipedal to run faster is that they seem to have had very stiff spines.
Mammals can run fast on four legs because they are very flexible. The cheetah is an extreme example.
Four legs and a stiff spine is an inefficient way of running.
