I've read about some sort of "schism" that happened at TAF (from the How Did You Find Rationalia.com? thread). I'm really interested in internet culture, especially inter-forum phenomena such as raids. So what happened?
Entertain me.

No, I was just curious about what happened at Thinking Aloud Forum. If it's any connection to what's happening now, they're both migrations {

} from what I gather.

TAF preceded this forum. Most of us migrated here from there.
RDF ---> TAF ---> Rationalia (some took a detour to Herd of Cats)

Serious errors of judgement followed by significant differences of opinion, but otherwise as Bella said:
Both fora are now quite different in some respects which is only to say that each will have greater appeal for different sets of people. There have been minor instances of animosity but hopefully no longer. Life is too short for bullshit.

I'm interested in knowing what the first schism was- I was not around when it happened so I'm quite ignorant of the matter.

First schism was due to feral OT and vets being pulled. Most of the people you see coming here in the past few days were people who were happy to stay at RD.net.
I don't know the beef between Thinking Aloud and Rationalia, but Thinking Aloud looks like a really horrible place every time I go to it.

And what is this IIDB scandal that took place? Another atheist forum?
"The idea of a "god" creating the Universe is a mechanistic absurdity clearly derived from the making of machines by men." Fred Hoyle, The Black Cloud
"Your book of myths is about as much use as a fishnet condom is for birth control." Calilasseia

IIDB was the oldest & bigest atheist forum on the net and was broken down in a very similar maner like RDF.
http://www.rantsnraves.org/wiki/index.p ... Chronology
chronology of the forum breakdown, written by people that were really pissed off at the management of IIDB
There are several forums on the net now due to that schism, talkrational, secular cafe & freeratio being three major ones

TAF suffered from a similar one-person-in-ultimate-charge problem, twelve months ago, that RDF has just come unstuck with. There was a kind of "if you don't like it then leave/ban" attitude which upset many people, such that the community there was wrecked and jumped ship to here. As WA said above, errors of judgement. The personality rifts were mostly healed over during the following months, to the extent that TAF's originator was a regular member here for quite a while.
That's all in the past now, as far as just about everyone here and at TAF is concerned. We've moved on for the most part.

That's the kind of attitude that will only help re-unify the online rationalist community.
You want to know the truth? Anyone who hasn't been to either Ratz or TAF thinks both are nothing but exclusive cliques who spend all day posting off-topic inside jokes--which is extremely off-putting to many hard-core debators from RDF. And having been to both, I can say that there really isn't much difference between the two besides the fact that TAF has a few n00bs spreading shit about Ratz, and Ratz has, well, people like you. If you want to spread opinionated bullshit, please, at least do something productive and slander some fundie forums, places that actually deserve it. Ratz and TAF are already lacking enough reputation as it is...

Kind of you to put it so clearly.
