Welcome to Rationalia - a place of some description

Post by normal » Thu Aug 02, 2012 10:36 am

We are a bunch of people, that is for sure. I mean, it's not like we are ocelots or cockroaches or anything.

Some of us hide in anonymity, some of us are semi anonymous and some of us share the whole deal - stories of our feelings, kittens, families, sexual adventures, travels, whatever.

While I used to think that only the ones that were either close to, or completely, open about themselves were the "best" members, I have to admit that I really enjoy the company of those that aren't as well. They share in a different way, but are still of great value to the general feeling of this place. We have our reasons for anonymity, and some people prefer it, while others are forced to remain just a name with a generic avatar. I'm glad for all who want to contribute by either discussion, chit chat or endless series of puns.

I see a staggeringly vast spectrum of viewpoints and opinions on different matters, but I still feel the main vibe we manage to send out is one of humour, community and maybe a bit of intimacy (not sure if that's the word I was looking for).

Our rules are kind of slack, but we mostly react badly to assholes, and that can sometimes lead to huge dramas - some even of inter forum proportions. We welcome anyone, but are not suited for everyone. I still like to think of it as a pub where you come to have some laughs, and talk to friends - and maybe even learn something new (like how to pick up a pillow without the use of your hands, head or feet).

Now I forgot where I was going with this. But Rationalia is a place of some description (someone will surely disagree with this), and I'd love to see you on one of the meets we do several times a year.

Ps. We have lots of smileys, but I prefer this one:

I like to describe it as one of the most forums I've ever been a member of.
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

Well, I have no idea why I am here, since I break the three rules of the forum, and with such ease and regularity too: I do not meet people, as they make me nervous. I do not think everything should be a joke. And I do not like cheese. That makes me as un rationalia as it is possible to get, and still be a member here. I am really interested in anything deep, serious and heavy, and although you do do that, it is not as prolific as, say at rat skep, which is more my cup of tea. I honestly do not know. There is possibly some appeal in the warm one feels here, but there has to be more to it than that. I have no idea. I am more of an observer here anyway. I tend not to get involved. I have nothing against loud people, but I try to avoid it myself. I feel that I should not speak ever again but just write instead. I honestly do not know. Maybe because here is such a contrast to over there. I do not know. If I ever find out, I shall let you know, but don't hold your breath. Actually I do like cheese, but not in preference to bacon, and there is always a choice. The funny thing is I no longer eat bacon but I do eat cheese. I don't know.

Logging on to rationalia is like having my real life friends here in my lounge room. We can say and do anything without fear as we are all so comfortable with each other. The thing I keep forgetting, though, is that rationalia isn't my private lounge room. It's the internet. Oh well. Thank god i'm sort of anonymous.

The first part is a bit of the opposite of what I mean. I don't think you should meet people when you prefer not to and you don't have to think everything is a joke! (But I think I should try to find the funny in a majority of what I do). So I don't think you're unrationalia at all. I'm glad you're here!

I disagree about the bacon bit

You're in, dood.

What sort of deeper topics do you enjoy discussing? I enjoy thinking about deep things quite a bit (Philosophy major), but I've found less enjoyment in discussing them online. Not just here, pretty much every forum, I mean.

I think philosophy is a crack up to discuss online. It always descends to farce. I love it!

Most of philosophy is a farce to begin with. ;)

I like anything which is deep. Physics, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion. Politics, History. This is not really the place to discuss it as you know. They are far more interested in cheese and innuendo than anything serious here, man. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just saying. There are a few heavies here such as Coito and Seth and Gallstones and rasetsu, but they tend to be in the minority. The lights have have it by sheer force of numbers, hence the relative abundance of aforementioned cheese and innuendo. But they are harmless and leave us alone and we them, so we get on alright, even if we don't really socialise that much.

I still think you can be surprised if you start a topic you are interested in. Not sure though ;)

The idea that real conversations don't happen here is only clinged on to by people who have very specific terms and timing in which those conversations need to occure. Some of the posters who have contributed the most sillyness have also contributed wonderful, thoughtful and deep posts. I'll use FBM as an example because one of his many great posts was enough to change my entire outlook on my life

This forum is something. It's definitely something. I shant say more because I fear I've said too much already. But it's something.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.
