Re: So, PZ is a stone-cold racist.
Trolling PZ is a great way to generate hits. My friend Wayne at the Gazette does it deliberately from time to time when he wants to up his Klout score because the netwits over at his blog can't help themselves and cast themselves like lemmings at Wayne in impotent fury in droves.
It's really quite amusing.
PZ has wised up enough to know that if he acknowledges something Wayne writes about him, it just makes it even worse (or better, depending on how you look at it).
I see no reason why we shouldn't continue to troll PZ's blog, all it can possibly do is to draw more members here.

That's not a policy I would want to deal with, but I'll admit that this episode hasn't worked out too bad for us. Quite a few people at Pharyngula have recently been banned, and we've picked up a number of new members. And we don't ban people who disagree with our leaders, not least of the reasons why being because we have none (and thus no sycophants, either).Seth wrote:I see no reason why we shouldn't continue to troll PZ's blog, all it can possibly do is to draw more members here.

There was never a threat. There was a faux question about the morality of the act. It was meant to be absurd and never a real question. No matter how many people repeat it, doesn't make it true.
People have every right to be offended, and Pappa apologized for hurt he caused individuals because it was never the intention.
I think that'll be my last post on the subject...maybe when I come back from my birthday week the forum will be back to talking about cheese, beer and tits...

Re: So, PZ is a stone-cold racist.
So while the person who called her a pig and her friends are not particularly pleasant people, it was the person who told the girl who trolled her, even if it was genuine concern it was trolling because as we have been told time and time again. INTENT DOES NOT MATTER. The girl was oblivious to the catty comments until said "someone" thought it a good idea to tell them.lilandra wrote:I have written a girl up for posting that another girl is a pig on her facebook, a lot of girls joined in. Now consider this. The assumption is that Pappa knew the skepchicks were a gang of women who had been sexually assaulted. I don't think that the case, but I can understand why they would be upset about it, I really can. However they were oblivious to it. The person who informed them knew in advance their reaction would be to be hurt and offended. That is not just insensitive, it is vindictive.
What do you call a person who exploits the emotional state of sexually assaulted women for his own personal amusement? Someone who manufactures a furoré
and pretends they are doing it for noble reasons as if they are morally superior and then goes on to make jokes about mass murder and rape?
Remember before you defend that person that we are told, INTENT DOES NOT MATTER.
I have no problem with the invective from Skepchicks, after all they were the ones at the butt of the jokes. I do have a problem with a supposed academic (who seemingly has problems in reading words rather than assuming intent) who uses a coterie of young vulnerable women to promote himself to a position of authority.
I said it before and I meant it. That isn't even sexism. That is true misogyny. That is truly contemptuous.
It is exploiting victims of tragedy as a tool to sate one's desires. There is not much difference in that kind of thinking and the kind of thinking that says "it's alright to rape and kill this bitch because it's my satisfaction that is important."
"What started as a legitimate effort by the townspeople of Salem to identify, capture and kill those who did Satan's bidding quickly deteriorated into a witch hunt" Army Man

I admit that I misread you slightly and that I was responding to a somewhat different point then you were making. But I still think that post I linked is a valid response even if I didn't frame it correctly.lilandra wrote:That comment was in response to this...cogwheel wrote:NO ONE has said the skepchicks shouldn't have been upset about the joke.lilandra wrote:So members of their community are mocking them publicly with rape threat jokes, and the Skepchicks shouldn't be upset because they never pretended to be their friends?

You're trying so hard to make analogies that you're losing the substance of what we're actually saying.

Re: Links
Just so you understand this is a forum where all opinions (expect personal abuse) are allowed.
They may not be unanimous.
They may receive invective.
But they are not censored.
I for one thought pappa's joke was very funny.
Tasteless, robust and, as can be seen now, very, very ironic.
I don’t think he needed to apologise, I certainly wouldn’t have.
I’m not scared of being labelled sexist/bigot/racist because I’m none of those things..
The thread of PZ as a racist shows what hypocrisy abounds over there.

And that's the one thing that still confuses me about atheism, because equality is a Christian egalitarian belief.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
