What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Net is best considered analogous to communication with disincarnate intelligences. As any neophyte would tell you. Do not invoke that which you have no facility to banish.

Is Rebecca Watson L.Ron Hubbard in a new body?

Looks like a Scientology 'fair game' policy to me. :ab:

Beccy is getting the WMD's out here. However will all those trolls cope with hitting that 'block' button?

Go Beccy! You told 'em! :fp:

Did one of the Skepchicks really have to cancel her appearance or cut it short because of that t-shirt?
The second link, earlier, brought you straight to her article. What happened?
Looks like the entry has been removed for reasons best known to the blog owner.

Possibly too many Potential RapistsTM were looking at it.
OK strike that - I've found out that the links are shite on FtB because of the way it handles page overflows. So I humbly take back my earlier snark at Butterflies and Wheels with all due apologies. If you want to find the exact quotes seek and ye shall find.

I'm going to post on this issue whenever I get a chance, after a good sleep, almost impossible at the moment. I haven't even had a chance to read this thread. I just want to say that I have no time for (no) freethoughtblogs and I'm so proud to be a member of rationalia at this moment and porcupines to be inserted anally all round:-)

After reading this thread all I can say is who is up for a wine and cheese party?

O.k. -- here is Paula Kirby's contribution dated July 1, 2012, one year after Elevatorgate. Folks may remember Paula as one of the women who did not fall into lock-step with the Skepchicks and their harassment brigade. She was lambasted by the Skepchicks hard and was made part of the Skepchick scorched Earth policy of engagement of dissenters. Here is a thoughtful, albeit lengthy, "open letter" that she put out earlier this month, and I think it has not gotten enough attention. it's called "Sisterhood of the Oppressed." https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B02RDDb ... edit?pli=1

Please -- give it a read. It's a well-written piece, and demonstrates very clearly why the Skepchicks are wrong, and why they are not good for skepticism, atheism, or feminism.

Coito ergo sum wrote:Over the last year, we've seen a number of Wars declared, generally involving a certain faction of the skeptic movement, led but not exclusively populated by, the Skepchicks.

There was the original action between feminists and Richard Dawkins:
Started by Dawkins when he made a hysterical, unprovoked attack on Rebecca Watson...
They went after Brian Dunning of Skeptoid
For doing bad science...
They went after Lawrence Krauss
For defending a child rapist...
There was the skirmish with Ann Althouse
It's Ann Althouse, can you blame them!? Really?
They went after DJ Grothe of JREF and TAM
No, again it was Grothe who went after them by blaming them, without any evidence, for declining attendence at TAM.
There was the latest one against Dr. Marty Klein
Who completely misrepresented the incident he was writing about then went back and dishonestly edited his post.

Looks to me like the skepchicks are just women sticking up for themselves. I'm not sure why that infuriates people so much...

Did they paint TAM as a bastion of institutionalized sexism and hatred towards women like what we've seen from the PZone?
