Do You Miss Subtext In Movies?

Post by pErvinalia » Thu Sep 17, 2020 10:53 am

I do. I just never see it. What about you? And what are some movies with alleged subtext?

Here's a couple:

Robocop was American Jesus (heard the director specify that explicitly)
Sauron in lord of the rings was a giant vagina. So it was supposedly sexual. And Frodo and Sam are gay.
Avatar was an example of a common theme in movies where enlightened Westerners become the saviour of indigenous cultures. I didn't even notice that when I first watched it.

One I do almost always notice, because I hate it, is the 'accidental hero'. It's why I hated the Harry Potter books (Hermoine is the talented one who does most of the saving of the day (at least in the early story)).

Actually, that last one isn't really a subtext. it's a theme.

Sam and Frodo aren't gay. I never heard them mentioning Barbra Streisand once.

Sam wanted to put his finger in Frodo's ring.

Being openly gay back then was frowned upon.

Subtext is supposed to be subliminal. If you see it, it is no longer subtext.

Subtext is any content of a creative work which is not announced explicitly by the characters or author, but is implicit or becomes something understood by the observer of the work as the production unfolds.

That's the meaning of subtext as intellectual arthouse cinema dilettantes employ it. I gave you the political one, the way Goebbels employed it. he audience was meant to walk out at the end of the movie they watched, feeling happy and having been entertained, while unknowingly having Aryan values and a disgust of Semites encouraged or reinforced. Apart from one notable misstep, The Eternal Jew, the film industry Goebbels was in charge of churned out one wholesome looking and entertaining feature film after another. The subtext in each was, as it were, subliminal.

It's only subliminal to the uneducated masses. Elites like Ratzians can spot them in a trice... :tea:

And there should be a beauty contest for "Miss Subtext". It will be won by a transgender goth person studying semiotics...

Give yourself a week's suspension on grounds of unacceptably insulting subtext, Jocka.
