any experts in Louisiana and Cajun talk?

Post by Svartalf » Fri Oct 27, 2017 6:40 pm

So I just found a song, by one Hugh Laurie that goes "Joshua fit the battle of Jericho"
I'm told it's New Orleans blues
but that sentence makes no sense to me, the verb "fit" does not fit the context
"fought" would, but it's not what the text says
so any experts to unravel me this? Is this some kind of unusual accent that I don't know of yet?

Nope. Just a quirk of the dialect - here 'fit' is the past participle of fight.

I think it is more the influence of French.

not so sure, the pronunciation might be influenced by French, but the grammatical change is completely nonsensical

Upon reflection fight an fit probably have the same root. Getting 'fit' was presumably getting prepared to fight - what sports were about originally.

Puts Mr Laurie's low-energy version to shame. As does this...
