'Benny Hill saw sex as both a nightmare and an impossible dream'
What is it about our comedians and their tormented attitudes to sex? From Hancock and Sid chummily sharing Railway Cuttings to Steptoe and his son in Oil Drum Lane - with Eric and Ernie making breakfast in their pyjamas along the way - the menfolk would really rather prefer it for the female of the species not to be anywhere in their vicinity. (Hattie is only in Sebastopol Terrace with Sykes because she's his twin sister.) They can cope with dragons (Peggy Mount, Hylda Baker, Prunella Scales' Sybil Fawlty); they don't object to gay men (Kenny and Frankie always have the last word) or transvestites (it would be a brave citizen who'd take on Lily Savage or Edna Everage). But where women are concerned, a sheer, nicely balanced connoisseurship, free of prudishness, or a healthy outpouring of randiness and emotion: this is out of the question for the masculine person.
(continued) Genetics now proves Benny Hill is real, since the HiV epidemic they are much less prevalent than before....
