It *is* interesting.
As an aside I was discussing the Norman conquest with my dad the other day (as you do) and as a slip of the tongue my dad referred to William as 'Norman the Conqueror'
Oh how we laughed.

Actually, Norman is the Southernized form of an old Viking name : Thormod (Tormoid in Scottish Gaelic) ... but in English language texts, clan chiefs bearing the name Tormod in the original get called Norman instead.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Norman names such as Norman

Also, how come you folk find this "interesting" while my reaction was "meh, is there anything I don't know yet in there?"?

Re: BBC article about the influence of 1066 on English
I've got a suspicion that the Normans were able to conquor England for the same reason that England was able to build an empire later.
Being conquored was something like a general election today.
We always read how harsh the Normans were as rulers, but we have no idea how harsh it was being ruled by some Anglo Saxon king. The british empire was built by replacing incredibly harsh regimes. If you're a peasant living a miserable life, downtrodden by your rulers, you are not likely to fight to the death to preserve that rule.
Of course, when you find out the new lot are even worse, it's too late.
It's very like a general election really, except that the elections are less regular.
