I would class your rather splendid Chuck Close examples as 'art' as the artist obviously has great technical skill and imagination and hasn't blugeoned us with any superfluous 'hidden' meaning. It wouldn't take pride of place in my living room, but neither would the 'Haywain'.

If an 'artist' commissions a third party to physically build their 'concept' or 'visualisation' whilst they go off on a three day bender and then dismisses any criticism as a failure to comprehend the 'dualism' or 'schism' it represents, then they deserve the vague, non-descript, prefix of 'modern'. Not cutting edge or innovative, merely recent.
It's funny until someone gets hurt. Then it's just hilarious.

Modern art is the fecal matter of the delusional.
It is dull, and most importantly it doesn't present anything which has not been done better elsewhere. Nobody appreciates subtelty anymore.
