tvtropes idiom has been creeping into my everyday speech of lately. English not being my primary language, this causes some confusion sometimes. It's a shame my fellow students don't know what Aplied Phlebotinum, or a Crowning Moment of Awesome is.

Today I found out they were unaware that the cake is a lie.

Nonsense. It's just laziness.
And I'm not so far removed from 'that group' considering it's my age group who has adopted tha atrocious Americanism.

I think it has a lot more to do with group identity than laziness.

I'm sorry, but the word "awesome" is, like, totally awesome. I'd go so far as to say it is wicked awesome. And if people don't like things that are totally wicked awesome, they can fuck off. Holla!

I don't get laziness. How is it lazier to annunciate the word "like" than it is to just go "um" or "err"?

It's fashion, trend, affectation, herd-mentality, monkey-see-monkey-do - sure - but laziness? :dono:

I think in the case of the overuse of "like" it's turned into a speech disfluency, and is used as filler like "um" or "er.'

I picked up the habit of "He was all like..." before I knew that it was considered gendered. People were all like: "Your totally talking like a girl!"

Nobody actually said "Your totally talking like a girl!", but it they expressed something very much along those lines.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Isn't it like, "You're like, totally talking like a girl." I think you like, missed a "like", innit.
