Twas a fun day! Let's hope we get to repeat it some time!maiforpeace wrote::sighsm:Rum wrote:All this talk of chip butties got me thinking about a much overlooked, ignored and demeaned British phenomenon and institution. One that we are in danger of losing as we are swamped by pizza, kebab and curry takeaway shops. And when they are gone it will be too late. It will be a legacy lost and a wonder unrecognised.
If you have not walked into a British fish and chip shop on a cold winter night and revelled in the smell of frying potatoes and sizzling fish and batter, with the odour of vinegar and damp clothes woven through it, then well..you have not experienced the soul of much the the united Kingdom - north of Birmingham anyway.
Even though it wasn't the best shop in your estimation Rum, I miss eating Fish and Chips in Skipton with you.

In 1969, in Nottingham, they were definitely called scrumps. First time I lived away from home, at Nottingham University, and first time I'd ever heard of them at all.Pensioner wrote:floppit wrote:Yeah - that sounds nearer. You could buy a small bag for pennies, what they scooped out after frying the fish - sounds unpleasant but it was just fresh fried batter, pancake crisps! WTF did we call it? Someone else here must have had it. HELP!Scraps.

While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Re: The great British fish and chip shop
So far from my random sampling, Northern Irish chips very good, but fish rather poor. (and you have to specify battered sausage.. as if one could want any other kind?)
Frozen fish.. Now THAT'S blasphemy.
Also, "chippy" is a silly word for a shop, when every right thinking person knows it's a "chipper".. and "chip" is singular, not plural. Crazy bloody Norns!!
