Well, of course. Getting to the semi-finals is a great achievement. And, you are right, with England, it's all about the expectations. It's similar to Canada, if they disappoint in hockey.Rum wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 9:13 pmIt does appear that England always seems to 'disappoint', but in context of course every country that doesn't win is a massive disappointment to its fans. By definition most fans are on the losing side of most matches.Forty Two wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:45 pmBelgium has the capacity to beat England, for sure. It could go either way. The Belgian team really has a good attacking game.
I just got done explaining to folks earlier today that England just always disappoints, and they manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It's so sad because every world cup, I find myself wishing England would win, and saying "maybe this could be the year..." -- I am an England fan, for no reason I can explain. But, they are just that sad-sack team now -- oughta-win -- it's their turn -- it's their game -- but, they just choke.
Unfortunately for England, its teams are hugely well known all over the world and clubs like Manchester United have fans in pretty much every country in the world. England and football are linked historically and culturally and people have huge expectations of them as a result. Those expectations have not been met in the past but getting to the semi finals ain't bad really - and I think this group and this manager will do well in the future.
There's no doubt Croatia were the better team this evening though.

Arguably the best football here is club football. Mrs Rum is from near Sunderland and a huge footy fan - it is almost in their genes over there! She's an enthusiastic supporter and follows the progress of the season keenly. I watch the occasional important match and that's about it.
Shortly after we met she took me to the one and only ever professional game I've been to see live. I had a camper van at the time. We parked that near the Stadium of Light which was handy when the thousands came streaming out at the end of the game.
I have never felt an atmosphere like it. It was really quite moving.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

still a full helf time and the stops for the brits to bring back a victory, now, if they should win, I'll pray for a big meteorite (tunguska size) to fall on the stadium during the match.

RTÉ are treating the third place play off like it's nothing. No pundits or anything. Just an Aprés Match segment.

maybe they are right... given that the Irish weren't even in the cup, I'm surprised it developed any interest on the whole russian propaganda op.

Re: In Putin's Russia, World Cup plays you.
I’m puzzled by the anti England sentiment is is the England football team you hate or all English people?
Re: In Putin's Russia, World Cup plays you.
I didn't mean to be anti English, I'm sorry if I came across that way. Just a little friendly ribbing I thought.
I'm cheering for the French half of my ancestry this World Cup though, so that does(did) sort of put us at odds.

2-nil! That's it then. England clearly didn't have what it takes to bring it home, I'm sorry to say.
Re: In Putin's Russia, World Cup plays you.
Vive la France! I've learned to sing the Marseillaise in anticipation.France beat Belgium 1-0 to make the 2018 World Cup final, while Croatia upset England 2-1 in extra time. France enters the 2018 World Cup finals as -110 money line favorites, meaning you'd need to wager $110 on a French victory to win $100. Croatia is going off at +360 World Cup odds (risk $100 to win $360), while a draw in regulation returns +230.
