Re: American Football
Well, like any other sport, it takes some watching. Eventually, you'll start adopting a team to root for, most commonly whatever team is fairly local to you, or whatever team is among your early positive experiences with the game.Animavore wrote:Was watching some game in the pub the other day. Quite entertaining. Couldn't tell you who were playing or anything
Not everyone likes football, American style, but it can be a fun time at the pub, when everyone is into the games, and there is rooting and cheering from different fan-bases. And, it's a situational game, so to speak, meaning that there are times when there is a lot of suspense and anticipation, because there will be a lot riding on a single play at a single moment.
Football has the fun of the give and take of the usual plays, and then there is the build-up - like when there is a set play for a field goal, and it's the end of the game 1 second left on the clock, and the game is tied. That one kick is exciting not so much because it is exciting to see a kicker kick a ball, but because of what is riding on that kick. There is a lot of that in football.
I have theorized that it is that commonality between football and baseball that makes those the two most popular team sports in the US - situational play, and the leadup to key moments when a lot is riding on a single play. Maybe there is something in American culture that caused the popular sports to evolve so dramatically in that direction. We had a fairly isolated development over the US's first century or so, and Europe was a far away place where there wasn't much cultural interaction. The isolation/separation caused the continents' respective sports to develop in different directions.

Jesus decided not to help Tim Tebow tonight. The Patriots demolished the Broncos 45-10 in the playoffs.

Great win by the niners......Alex smith has proven himself as a great QB.

I'm rooting for Baltimore and New England.

They're playing each other in half an hour. Only one of them will go to the Super Bowl.
