In a worker ant society like 'merica or ussr too much free time stressful
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 124451.htm
Too much free time may be almost as bad as too little
Worker ant societies can't chill
As an individual's free time increases, so does that person's sense of well-being -- but only up to a point. Too much free time can be also be a bad thing, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
"People often complain about being too busy and express wanting more time. But is more time actually linked to greater happiness? We found that having a dearth of discretionary hours in one's day results in greater stress and lower subjective well-being," said Marissa Sharif, PhD, an assistant professor of marketing at The Wharton School and lead author of the paper. "However, while too little time is bad, having more time is not always better."
The research was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
Researchers analyzed the data from 21,736 Americans who participated in the American Time Use Survey between 2012 and 2013. Participants provided a detailed account of what they did during the prior 24 hours -- indicating the time of day and duration of each activity -- and reported their sense of well-being. The researchers found that as free time increased, so did well-being, but it leveled off at about two hours and began to decline after five. Correlations in both directions were statistically significant.

It does seem to apply to life in boring lockdowns, at least for me. I doubt that parents of young children would have an excess of free time...

Listen to jazz, chill with a few beers. Could take me all day to empty the bins.

Free time and having nothing to do are not the same thing.

I have most of my time free and at my disposal, and it sure is better than when I worked at a job I hated and that gave me depression and burnout.

Depends what you call 'nothing to do'.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 8:01 amFree time and having nothing to do are not the same thing.
I mean, I have fewer chores than many (and am rather remiss in doing them), but when it's time to find stuff to occupy myself, I have little trouble, plenty of stuff I can do to pass the time.

One mans chore is another mans monkeying about. All very subjective. But Americans are entrained by their media to have a short attention span so I guess two hours mush be way beyond their patience to have nothing to do...

Free time is time that you don't owe or are obliged to give to others - like when you're not a work and don't have to take your mother-in-law to her mamogram appointment etc. In free time you are free to fill your time however you want/can: whittling spoons from old chair legs, reading medieval French poetry, distilling raspberry wine, researching papers on 6σ quantum anomalies, wanking, painting watercolours of cats, experimenting with psychedelic drugs, learning to tap dance while juggling, whatever..Svartalf wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 10:48 amDepends what you call 'nothing to do'.Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 8:01 amFree time and having nothing to do are not the same thing.

Literally having nothing to do is soul destroying for most people, and social anthropologists have observed that many people without free time - i.e. in a job - spend a lot of their un-free time with literally nothing useful to do, particularly in admin and middle-management positions. And so, when these people are not trying to look busy for the sake of form, they're given or create pointless meaningless tasks to justify their salaries and attendance in the workplace. IMO that is worse than idleness - that's a form of emotional/psychological abuse. Imagine what these people could be achieving if only they were allowed the time to do it?

You mean, like the period I had to clock at work in the morning, and stay the whole day, but had precisely no work to do because nobody in a position to do so would give me any? and I could not take out my book and read either?
Yeah, that period, I drank like a fish... and ended up falling deep enough back into depression that I simply stopped going to the office.

Exactly my point. You had nothing to do, but no free time either. This is hell for us 'creative types' isn't it?Svartalf wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:00 pmYou mean, like the period I had to clock at work in the morning, and stay the whole day, but had precisely no work to do because nobody in a position to do so would give me any? and I could not take out my book and read either?

I'm not sure I'm a creative type, I'm more the absorbing type, but sure, stewing in my boredom with no relief in sight is sheer hell.
