Being parented by constant disapproval and the threat of physical abuse never did me any harm. It's character building. Youngsters today have got it so easy. They need to grow up and learn how to deal with their problems like adults - with alcohol, drugs, risky sex and casual violence.

My childhood was sublime. Near perfect I would say in terms of freedom, fun, adventure, good friends and just having a brilliant time every day.

Sadly my parents were of the pre psychology school. If I came second in an exam they wanted to know why I didn’t come first. I never felt quite ‘good enough’ despite overcoming quite a few hurdles.

Maybe it served me well in the end, though I never quite got that very top job...just the one below.
