Millennials have no hope for future

Post by pErvinalia » Sat Feb 16, 2019 11:10 pm

Some millennials aren’t saving for retirement because they don’t think capitalism will exist by then
CNN reported last week that 66 percent of millennials aged 21 to 32 have nothing saved for retirement. And while their writer chalks up this inequity to student loans, “stagnant wages” and “high unemployment,” there may yet be a deeper cause: many millennials honestly don’t see a future for our economic system.

I grew up with nuclear paranoia. Every local skirmish threatened to blossom into global war and for a period I even refused to watch the news, it was all so scary. In bygone centuries fear of a religious end, e.g. Armageddon was pretty prevalent too of course.

Fearing the end of everything seems to be a common human neurosis, which of course does not mean one is wrong to be alarmed by any given scenario.

I strongly suspect the current young'uns are right. A friend in the Occupy movement asked me in 2011 how long I reckoned till society collapsed - I said 10-15 years. It's getting closer. I wonder if I was too pessimistic? I still think we are on the edge now and it could all blow up at any moment. GFC The Sequel could be it.

Saving for the future at age 32? Who they fucking kidding? I couldn't have saved a fart at that stage of my life.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I spent all my money on high living.

Still, it was a good three weeks while it lasted. I went to the pictures twice.

There were two young fellows behind me on the bus tonight. They were talking about their time at university - they'd just discovered they were at the same university at the same time. One had a physics degree, the other a degree in Medieval Spanish. It was 1145pm and they'd just finished their shifts at a nearby supermarket. Of course millennials have difficulty seeing a future when bright young things like these two are stuck in a low-wage economy they'll probably never escape from.

There are millions of them!

Capitalism is already dead.

It has been replaced by Corporate Cronyism.

Corporate cronyism is an emergent phenomenon out of capitalism.

I’m not saying it isn’t tough for young ‘uns - my daughter has struggled like mad to swim against the low wage tide. Just a point r.e. the above though. In England they are screaming out for physics graduates for teaching. There are even incentive golden handshakes on offer - and academies don’t even need to employ people with teaching qualifcations. Maybe different in Scotland of course.

The medieval Spanish guy may as well go shoot himself now and get it over with.

An 18 year old can't usually get a 20,000 dollar business loan, but the lenders have no problem letting that same kid sign up for 200,000 dollars worth of student loans.

Maybe academics aren't the best judge of the value of academia. Those grocery store workers (if they remain there) would have been better off financially if they had done what Brian Peacock claims to have done.

Of course, they will have UNTOLD benefits from their education, personally, but financially, they would have been better off without.

It is actually quite easy. A woman has at least one X chromosome.

I haven't saved for retirement because I never had any money left to save, I lived hand to mouth the whole time I was working, and still do now.
