well, the original Conan is rather easy to find nowadays, the trashy series lancer Published, 'edited' by carter and de camp and full of their trash, no longert is the authoritative edition. I may recommend the 2 volume edition in the Fantasy Masterpieces collection by Gollancz... Ballantine Books' Del Rey collection also includes a 2 or 3 volume edition of Conan, and is fairly recommendable if I judge by their work on other parts of the Howard corpus.

I didn't realise that Conan was like King Arthur and other such famous characters that I can't think of at the moment. I can't help thinking it's like Jason Moama playing Conan instead of Arnie. Just not right. :nono:

neither movie was good, the john milius could have been a masterpiece, if it had been titled anything else than 'Conan'... as it is, it's a load of shit in the face of every Howard fan.

No movies ever do justice to the books they are based on...

it goes beyond that... the Schwarzie movie deliberately went against canon, if only by giving the main character biographical elements not conforming to those of the original (the secret of steel, having been a gladiator in the far east, whatnot...) or by including characters that have no place ther (Thulsa Doom is a Kull opponent, and he's a necromancer, not a serpent man; Valeria is a lady pirate from the story Red Nails, conpicuously not referred to in the movie)... that's great alchemical work, turning pure literary gold to utter dreck...

I basically agree, Svarty. I haven't got any of the originals in book form at the moment - I think I might see if I can get 'em on Kindle...
Get them on Kobo no problem but then I am not stuck to Amazon.

I think I remember now what I didn't like about The Wheel of Time. As far as I remember it was one contrived event after another. It's not unlike Tolkien (and Monty Python's; The Holy Grail), each chapter brings the travellers to a new place - a town, forest, cave, mountain pass - which they have to traverse and they meet some obstacle - assassin, sorceror, monster, poisonous swamp gas - along the way.

I'm not sure if the style has a name; I'd call it a beaded style, like a thread with beads, Rosary or anal or whatever. The style doesn't feel (ugh!) organic to me. I much prefer the narrative driven style of Malazan or ASOIAF which have events evolve over many chapters. It's closer to the way things actually work.

Stared the "Fatemarked" series by David Estes. It's OK, nothing to scream about but readable. Finished the first book last night and bought the 2nd. Some people are born with "fatemarks" or "sinmarks" that are not usually visible except under strong firelight, and they have various powers depending on the mark. Great strength in battle, healing, etc. There's a hundred year war going on between the 4 kingdoms, and now Bane, who is Deathmarked, rises to kill 8 kings and bring peace.

First book was a bit young adultish, but not too bad. If the 2nd gets better I'll likely finish the series, otherwise it's back to the search for something decent.

The Wheel of Time series, by Robert Jordan, completed by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s death. Again, a brilliantly imagined world, with a detailed back-story and an interesting take on the mechanics of its version of magical powers, channeling… Arguably too long…
Now a TV series coming to Amazon prime. The Dutch version will be better.

At least the series is complete, 14 fucking tomes. Robert Jordan wrote 11 of them and then died, and Brandon Sanderson did the last three. I didn't finish the series, made it to book 8 I think, it just got too turgid and repetitive.
