Souls are everything in the catholic church which is why anything wrong at birth the mother pays the ultimate as the church has her soul. The baby is a fresh soul.

The Catholic church certainly seemed to many as if they 'owned the souls' of true believers. Guilt, fear of eternal damnation - and mostly guilt - made slaves of many a Catholic. It was as pernicious as Islam can be today in its way.

I think she still has a vague belief in god, but in all practical senses is not religious. Certainly the Catholic church here has taken a big hit in terms of practicing members - the ones that remain vaguely "cultural catholics" are of minor importance.
