Roast beef is no more English than the weekend. As for you liking Yorkshire pudding, I'm not surprised. You do live in Melbourne, right?
actually, the weekend IS English, there was a time when, in France, working only 5 days a week was called "doing the English week".

While the word "weekend" was first used in print in a British magazine in 1879, the practice goes back to at least ancient Rome. Even when the Romans had an eight day week, the eight day was for going shopping, not going to school and not working the fields. It followed the working week.

I advocate a 10-day week: 5 days on, 5 days off, 12 months of 3 weeks each.

Paid holiday is regressive. The richest among us get more compensation for not working than the poorest among us, and the poorest among us tend to perform the most unpleasant tasks. To make a truly progressive system, we would have everyone get the same amount of pay for their 8 week holiday, regardless of income.

That's regressive. People who are not as well paid work just as hard as people who are better paid. And, as we know, the capitalist patriarchy rewards certain jobs and professions arbitrarily, while underpaying other professions, particularly those dominated by women, minorities and the poorest among us.

So, if we're going to have a mandatory system of holiday time off, the government should mandate that time off be compensated in accordance with income. That is, a highly paid person should get only a small amount of holiday pay, because they are already highly paid and can afford time off with little to no compensation. Then the poorest among us should be compensated much higher than their actual wages because they need the money more and are less able to take holidays on their meager earnings.

The result of the current system is that the richest among us take holidays with their kids to Disney costing $10,000 a week, while the poorest among us are forced to go to campgrounds and engage in low cost activities (or even just stay home due to lack of funds).

Until we have holiday pay equity, there can be no justice, and hence no peace.
