except nowadays, there would be damn few crusaders if the pope called one, and they'd be damn ill equipped because most states prevent their non military citizens from accessing military grade gear.

It's the Roman Catholic agents of the Vatican in the field who will direct the next war, the one against Islam. Most people have simple ideas about the new world war we are in. Chess is easy.
