Public prosecutors in Germany are investigating a publisher's plans to print a new edition of Hitler's Mein Kampf without critical notes - a move that risks violating laws against spreading Nazi propaganda.

Leipzig-based publisher Verlag Der Schelm, or Rogue Publishing, said on its website it would reprint the unabridged 1943 version of Hitler's polemical text this summer.

The two-volume political treatise, which was written by Hitler between 1924 and 1926 and posits a global Jewish conspiracy, is regarded as one of the Nazis' main propaganda tools.

The 70-year copyright on the text, banned by the Allies at the end of World War Two, expired at the end of 2015, opening the way for a critical edition with explanatory sections and some 3500 annotations.

That edition of Mein Kampf, which means "My Struggle", went on sale in January 2016 after three years of labour by scholars at Munich's Institute for Contemporary History and has since sold far more copies than expected in Germany.

Publishing the text without critical notes could be considered tantamount to disseminating Nazi propaganda, which is outlawed in Germany.

The public prosecutor's office in Bamberg in Bavaria was checking whether charges could be brought on grounds of incitement, news agency DPA reported. No one at the office was immediately reachable for comment when contacted by Reuters.

Actually, historical notes to explain context and references might be useful, few of us have lived long enough to have known the Weimar republic.

No royalties because no more copyright 70 years after the death of the author. Before, the Bavarian treasury was holding the copyright and did earn some money from editions published in other countries, although it mostly tried to prevent any publishing until the beginning of this year.

For English readers, there is a new Ford translation.
Reviews are mixed, and odd. This ford guy seemed to write many reviews himself saying how brilliant it was lol
I read one scholarly review that didn't like it.
So I Googled and found a Stormfront review, which I would consider the most authoritive since they actually like hitler, and he really liked it. Had nice comparisons and a history between the different translations.
The official and original English translation wasnt, it was only a rough draft. Original translator fell I'll and it was completed by a communist spy. The anecdoted mein kampf most scholars use was written by a jew. There is a stalog transaction written by a German American pow that's supposed to be good but amateurish. So people that like hitler like the Ford translation, though they strongly recommend you learn German and read the original lol.
Me? Never read it, never plan to. I'm a nationalist, not a nationalist socialist.

Take it from someone who has perused the German edition (my father's single-volume copy, issued to him when he was "volunteered" into the Hitler youth in 1937): It's the verbose rant of a loon. The font took a little while to get used to. No translation, no matter how bad, can hide the fact.

I read a translation made in 1939. I was 16 at the time and politically very involved in the Young Socialists. It took 6 months to read. I could read it only spurts as it was pure madness.
