A theory of zombies

One of the things that has bemused me lately is the incredible popularity of movies and TV programs about assorted variations on the theme of a zombie apocalypse. Somehow, people in vast numbers are turned into mindless zombies, and go around trying to find non zombified people to munch on.

Such movies and TV stories usually end up with people moving around from place to place shooting or otherwise killing zombies, usually in a very violent and messy way. These stories are mostly utterly mindless, and seem to me to be suitable for those people who have an IQ bordering on the moronic. Yet they are incredibly popular, why?

I have come up with a personal theory. I think that the fans of zombie stories are mostly males who have a strong and repressed tendency towards violence. In other words, they really would like to go around killing people, but they have that urge repressed. Hopefully because they know it would be wrong, but possibly to avoid being punished. Such people probably even avoid fantasizing about killing humans, because they know it is wrong.

For them, the zombie movie is a wonderful opportunity to unvent their most dreadful fantasies, such that they can imagine they are running around killing other humans wholesale. Only, of course, the people they are killing are zombies, so it is not morally wrong.

The whole (or maybe just most of it) zombie genre is comedic. It's not really about blowing things away. It's about the farce that is a zombie apocalypse.

Don't all males have a strong and repressed tendency towards violence whether they are zombie fan's or not. Civilization and education is all about repressing and/or redirecting it elsewhere?
