Is a psychologist worth the money?

I've just finished with my partner who I am absolutely crazy about.

We had an argument over three days in which she said I was cruel to my 15 year old daughter who during an incident on Sunday last had been very disrespectful to me (I withheld sweets and called her a bitch). My partner said I had excluded her and put her down.

Across three days I tried to calm the whole thing down, but during a phone call on Wednesday I couldn't get a word in while she pretty much eviscerated my parenting.

The thing is, she qualified everything although she was wrong - that I'm such a great dad although I was cruel and horrible in this case. I agree the "bitch" thing was wrong and I have discussed this with my daughter, but in every other aspect I am convinced I am right - I disciplined her for bring disrespectful by witholding some sweets/candy. That's okay....isn't it? Fuck I'm still questioning myself.

I've done a fucking Dev in real life haven't I? Gone way overboard and overreacted.

Mostly no, but in this case may be of some help. But the problem is that behavioral problems are the most difficult to tackle. The rich people here in the suburbs routinely use counseling with their kids. But it's a lot of work for all and you need to work wit them, team sessions.

One kid I heard of, a former boss's kid, was cured by the military school. He had the weekend introduction bit. "Dad, I'll do anything you want me to do, just don't send me there." Now he is a glass blower.

I've been seeing one for the past month. I was skeptical at the start and now, a month on, she still hasn't done anything for me. Still, it's nice to have somebody to talk to. I dunno, Dev. I'd say it can't hurt. Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose.

Some, most even, are like dodgy garage mechanics. There's no money in a fixed car. They'll loosen something, dwell on something you are dwelling on, experts at love bombing. Before you know it you are on more sleepers uppers and downers than a street addict with a empty wallet in the alley. Well mine doesn't cost me anything since my insurance covers it. She also told me that if there's any subject I didn't want to talk about, I didn't have to. Also, that if at any point I felt she wasn't helping me and I no longer wished to see her, I was free to stop our sessions. Also, she seems genuinely caring and compassionate. Also, she doesn't prescribe meds; only a psychiatrist can do that.
She has helped me in that she's working with a lawyer to get me on disability. If that's successful then she will have literally saved my life since I had given up on life , was ready to top myself, when I first went to see her. She's also referred me to her associate, a psychiatrist, to put me on meds. I need them. So she has helped me in a practical sense. It's just that she hasn't done any actual psychological counseling yet (whatever that might consist of).

I'm very pissed by the way.

1. Sober up - properly, beyond hangover.

2. Think very hard about what really has happened, and why. I dare to claim that - either you have not been completely frank (maybe to yourself) with what happened between you and your daughter - or your partner carries a huge bag on her shoulder that is starting to spill over.

3. Once you are through 1. and 2. you can start thinking about where to go next, including the option to seek (family) counseling.

Scumple, like normal you are blowing hot air. A psychologist doesn't prescribe meds, that's a psychiatrist. A psychologist talks with you, and let's you talk. I was on anxiety meds from a psychiatrist for a long while but after seeing a psychologist for a month I was able to get off of them and have never looked back.

I never realized the cathartic value in being able to be completely honest and open with someone and just being able to talk through things you would avoid saying to people you know or have an emotional investment in. And, though I did most the talking, the occasional pointed question that steered my thinking in a way that wouldn't have been possible talking in circles to myself. Despite being an atheist I had so much guilt hanging around from a religious upbringing that still affected my day-to-day life and decisions and what I let people get away with. I know it doesn't work that way for everyone, but for me it was the most positive experience I could have asked for, and it freed me up mentally to make really healthy and major changes in my life.
