The universe has been behaving more or less consistently since we've been making observations of it, but we can't know that the "laws" we observe matter and energy following have always been and/or always will be consistent in all places and in all dimensions. We assume it, but there's no guarantee.

Honestly, I hate these fucking arguments. I'm a strong believer in one of the anthropic principles (the one that makes more sense ). Bascially, the universe could have cycled a bazillion bloody times before this set of laws came along and were right for our existence. We AREN'T special. We are a fluke.
