Swedish cinemas take aim at gender bias with Bechdel test rating

You expect movie ratings to tell you whether a film contains nudity, sex, profanity or violence. Now cinemas in Sweden are introducing a new rating to highlight gender bias, or rather the absence of it.

To get an A rating, a movie must pass the so-called Bechdel test, which means it must have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man.

"The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, all Star Wars movies, The Social Network, Pulp Fiction and all but one of the Harry Potter movies fail this test," said Ellen Tejle, the director of Bio Rio, an art-house cinema in Stockholm's trendy Södermalm district.

Bio Rio is one of four Swedish cinemas that launched the new rating last month to draw attention to how few movies pass the Bechdel test. Most filmgoers have reacted positively to the initiative. "For some people it has been an eye-opener," said Tejle.

Even if there is only one woman, if she is a good character and interacts with the male characters on the same level/isn't just there as a prop, then wouldn't that also be a good example too? That she doesn't have to have another woman there in order to communicate or be effective?

Well if they want to rate their movies like that, great! Still the Bechdel test tells us nothing other than the script passes the Bechdel test. It says nothing else about the quality or content of the movie. Lesbian Fist fuckers 5 would probably pass. So, I think does Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Well as Audley stated it wont effect lesbian movies but what the fuck. Any mention of feminism nowadays gives me PTSD or PSTD or PDST or what ever it is called. Well firstly Dave, it's not a Governmental demand, it is four cinemas in a part of Sweden notorious for hipsters and other cliché'd "right on" types. Secondly, it matters not one fucking bit. Hollywood is not going to start changing it's formulas just to pander to a clutch of androphobes and their desperate toadies. Shit it's hard to get them to even have a black man with a white sidekick in an action movie.

Most people, men and women, just get on with life, point out occasional unfairness and expect that it will get noticed and change over time. People like the victim feminists and MRA's are lashing out because they are emotionally crippled by circumstances, because they are useless, know it and project their self loathing outwards or because they are mentally ill. In some cases its all three.
