Do they mean the northernmost states? :dono:
Close. This is the term that is often used for Canada. Most Canadians are not quite as amused by it.
Grrr... If someone actually said that, then if circumstances would in any way allow, I'd put their teeth in their brain, or in their case, what passes for one. Grrrrr.....

Don't know if you know, but I'm Canadian, and I get really fucking pissed when I hear that kind of casual making-fun-of-Canada bullshit. We're a good country overall, at least until Quebec leaves and we're too weak-willed and ballless to go put down the sedition and hang the ringleaders, but until that happens, Yay Canada!

Given you live in Canada I'd have thought you would have developed a sense of humour by now either that or a thicker skin

Well, it depends on what's being said. There is good humour, and there is crossing the line. If some overall friendly fellow mentioned it and he had referred to Canada in better terms previously, then I'd write it off as a joke, but if it was in a dismissive sense, then hulk smash.

Not here mate. If you want a thread about your nationalistic insecurities then here it is! Feel free to explain your over aggressive reaction to a mild stereotypical joke on this thread rather than in a new members welcome thread.

Ah US-Canada relations... many a doctorate thesis have been written on the subject :coffee:

It seems like RP mentioned "affectionately referred to as", thereby acknowledging that it's not seriously "America's hat", and perhaps even hedging themselves away from that viewpoint.

But yeah, the 'blame Canada' stuff, while funny to some, is kinda... not... quality humour, IMO. But who am I to judge?

All countries have stereotypical jokes made about them. In American films more often than not the Englishman is a the Gay bad guy. The Simpsons go on about bad English teeth (so does Family guy) . But does 'Nationalistic offence' give somebody the excuse to write something like 'Grrr... If someone actually said that, then if circumstances would in any way allow, I'd put their teeth in their brain, or in their case, what passes for one. Grrrrr..... '

The original comment was a generalisation aimed at a stereotype, the reaction was specific and at an 'individual' (all be it fictitious I sincerely hope that MoNF was not referring to RP).

I have a Canadian friend whom I constantly annoy by blaming her for Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, and Simple Plan. Then she points out that I like Nickelback and Cryptopsy, and a discussion on the musical merits, pros, and cons of Canadian bands ensues. But yeah, it's amusing to see her reaction to nationalistic teasing. I enjoy nationalistic humour myself. If anyone has a good Swiss joke, bring it. I love them, if you know my country it lends itself to jokes very easily.

So why does the law require you to build bomb shelters beneath every house?

In case Liechtenstein decides to annex us, I guess. Oh wait, they don't have an army, so we promise protection. HAH!

Seriously though, I guess it's a reactionary precaution due to WWII. We were right between warring factions, bad shit could have happened. At least this way when the world finally does blow up we'll be the only people saying "Vot voz dat noize?"

:hilarious: By all means!

I have heard it said, and I do agree, that one sign of maturity is to be able to laugh at oneself and really get the joke. I don't always reach this high standard myself, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't try.
