Books on Philosophy.

Post by Animavore » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:30 am

I'm having a really difficult time trying to read Sarte and Spinoza and fear I may have jumped in the deep end.
Is there any good books on philosophy, what it is, types of philosophy etc... preferably with an introduction to former logic that might help me better read this stuff?

I have one called something like "An introduction to Philosophy" that's pretty good. I can't seem to find it on Amazon though.

Russell's History of Western Philosophy is excellent - rich in detail, but delivered in digestible chunks.

I actually have that as an audiobook. I should start listening to it.

Something wrong with current logic? :hehe:

It's shit. Really, really shit. You're better off using wikipedia. Start with philosophy, following the links. When you find something that sounds really interesting, make a thread about it here, and we'll take it from there.

:funny:

Those of a philosophical bent will argue not only about the details of philosophy but also about the actual books in which it is discussed. Just can't help themselves

Well, to be fair I was off my tits on morphine after heart surgery, and I can't remember a fucking thing about it (except that the book was difficult to lift and hold), but it was good at the time.

Avatar is shit, and quite a lot of people liked that. Russell didn't understand a lot of things. He was a product of his times, and it shows. It means that the title should be "An English History of Western philosophy".
