I don't believe there are no gods, I just don't believe theists when they say there is a God. I don't believe Hindus when they say Vishnu or Ganesh exists, or Pagans when they say Herne the Hunter exists either. I don't believe any person or group who says that a supernatural entity has influence over them and their lives, and I definitely don't feel obliged to take them at there word or show them some special kind of respect or give them some special privileges just because they say that what they believe in is special and important. That makes me an atheist. A no-theist.
Perhaps when people who don't believe what others say on behalf of a god or gods are also reluctant to self-identify as 'atheist' its because doing so is stigmatised in there community. They avoid saying they're an atheist for an easy life, just to get by without a fuss. I know that I did that as part of a congregation for a few years myself. It was just easier to dodge the issue.
When it comes to my beliefs in a god or gods, well there's nothing in what the true believers have had to say that I've found compelling enough to sign back up. But although I'm happy to admit that I just don't know if that special kind of supernatural entity exists, whichever one it is that others seem so keen to agree and disagree with each other about, I'm not inclined to follow any creed or cause rooted in the assumption that they do exist. Quite frankly, I've got better things to do with my time than devote it to following the special rules of an assumed special entity promoted by a special group as necessary for a special, favor-currying, proper, or good life.
If a god or gods exist they seem to be ignoring us. I'm happy to return the favor until a time when they actually get around to doing stuff. And in the meantime I'm not shy or ashamed of saying that I don't believe in God, or any god or gods whenever that crops up.
