Let's take DNA. An organism sometimes duplicates DNA. The old bit does what it was supposed to do. The parts of the new bit initially do the same. They make the same proteins. But it is now free to mutate to new functions, with no harm to the organism. It still has the old bits.

Actually no. The university will grow cold far before we get to that. It's an interesting thing in itself, how fast the possibility of combinations grow, which then shows how vastly important selection is for evolution.

Asfaik the only qualia that actually seems to be emergent is awareness. Evereting else that is going on can be be explained through maths and physics, but awareness is still a true mystery. Probably we just think it's so special, because it's so close to us

I don't think "explained" is the correct word. For example, when you look at evolutionary trajectories of a clade of organisms, and the way their various adaptations track aspects of the environment, you cannot use quantum mechanics or organic chemistry as explanatory mechanisms, even though all the processes that happen are 100% consistent with, and based on, the underlying events at an atomic level. Different levels of reality have patterns amenable to different types of analysis; at the evolutionary level, natural selection is a required explanatory mechanism.
