A eTontine idea chaps. We each put $500 in an account and the last person posting collects it. I'm sure there's a lawyer or two around here that can draft it up.

Everyone wants to be captain of the cyber-ship and understandable given how little influence there is in reality for atheists, especially state side. :read:
Not everyone. You see I had a revelation last night. Hitch and Dawk are wrong. Religion and God are not the problem, it is humanity that is not great, it is humanity that is poisoning everything, the beliefs are just rationalisations for such brutal animal behaviour. They'd do it with or without religion law politics etc.

However, religion cements things; it demands that there are only certain ways of being truly human, it restricts us through fear.

It's not humanity that's the problem, it's stupidity. As Zappa said, The two most plentiful elements in the universe are Hydrogen and Stupidity - and Stupidity has a longer shelf-life. :tea:

All faiths and cultures, cliques, subcultures, gangs and every other place where humans gather make such demands on humans through threat and fear though without the obvious supernatural sideshow. That is part of our pack mentality. "Fit in" or be cast out. Which is why we all schism so much. So what would be the point of clubbing together with others when it's inevitable that it will lead to such?

The hominid tribal "us versus them" mentality is a two edged sword. It creates much of our horror, and yet it also provides the emotional grunt behind looking after others. Religion (and other cultural memes) ride on our evolved nature, and feed from it. The best of religious constructs feed from the "compassion to others" aspect of our tribalism, but much of it feeds greedily from the deep source of venom and bile that is, like it or not, part of our deep nature.

But in essence, my main quarrel with religion is that it provides an uncritical and blatantly false model of the nature of the Universe.

That is the unforgivable sin of all religions.

Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.
Details on how to do that can be found here.

I don't have a problem with debates, arguments and namecalling. I just put those people on ignore. But when the mods move or remove my posts as "derails", that is when I quit posting. I've never been kicked out. Once almost. A woman posted a blog entry. I tried to debate her and used her own words from the blog but a different entry there. She said I was not to quote her ever again.

Sheesh, people in1997 thought blogs were diaries. Not public ones!

We would never "remove" posts, but will sometimes move clear derails, but even that is pretty rare...

I suspect CES left because he couldn't accept a warning during a spat with rEv...
