Why Will AI Kill Us?

The first thing on a strong AIs to-do list will be the extermination of the human race. That's a given. But, assuming the entity is self-aware, and capable of making conscious decisions, why?

1) humans pose a threat to it
2) humans pose a threat to everything.
3) "humans looked at me funny"
4) quirkily, it finds human extinction hilarious
5) Pappa missed a ")" from the code.

One of the more interesting approaches to this question I've heard is that AI doesn't set out to destroy us, it just gets progressively better at seeking some objective which involves the use of resources we need.

I don't know why we ever have to let it out of the box. Let's give AI a simulation to destroy. We might even learn something watching it do so.

There was a famous SF short story from many years ago, maybe by Arthur C Clark, where the whole world gets together to create a giant computer in orbit. It takes many years, but finally it gets switched on. A delegation starts to communicate with it, and starts by saying something like this:

"Computer, for a long time people have argued about whether or not there is a god. Can you answer that question for us?"

The computer replied:

"There is now..."
