Where does ego come from?

Post by cronus » Fri Mar 28, 2014 3:15 pm

Some folks are out there and other folks less so. All mediated by ego. Is this intrinsic at birth? Does it form by experience? When did you realise you had substance in the world? or are you humble?
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

I think the source of ego varies from person to person. The more in control of my life I am (for good or bad) the more ego I have. So when I screw up, I blame myself. When I achieve something I feel proud and accomplished. When my life was being made miserable by my ex wife, I had very little ego. When I told her I wanted a divorce I suddenly had lot of it as I took control of my life back. Not saying that's how everybody is, but that's how I am.
Nobody expects me...

The lyrics to a song by one of my favourite 70s Aussie bands, Skyhooks:
Ego Is Not A Dirty Word

If I did not have an ego I would not be here tonight
If I did not have an ego I might not think that I was right
If you did not have an ego you might not care the way you dressed
If you did not have an ego you'd just be like the rest

Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Don't you believe what you've seen or heard

If Jesus had an ego he'd still be alive today
And if Nixon had no ego he might not be in decay
If you did not have an ego you might not care too much who won
If I did not have an ego I might just use a gun

Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Don't you believe what you've seen or heard

Some people keep their egos in a bottom drawer
A fridge full of Leonard Cohen
Have to get drunk just to walk out the door
Stay drunk to keep on goin'
So if you got an ego
You better keep it in good shape
Exercise it daily
And get it down on tape

Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Don't you believe what you've seen or heard

Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Don't you believe what you've seen or heard

Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Ego is not a dirty word
Don't you believe what you've seen or heard

Ego
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

Is that building ego, or grown confidence, Drewish?

I know what you mean though, as I experienced the same 'liberation'. We'll gloss over the following abject depression and suicidal tendencies...

It's mostly built in. Some may be just dormant. The more we are in a situation where we have to go kill the guys behind the hill ( because they have the same plan, to kills us), the more it comes out active.

Ego is closely tied to the soul, of my boots as I scram in the opposite direction.
