A bit of serendipity gave me the news that quite a few small-scale, sort-of communist-like societies have been thriving for decades in the US and quite a few other countries. There are two here in Korea. The populations of many/most of them aren't fixed, in that (as far as I can tell) people tend to come and go, but they seem to have solved the problem of communism/socialism's sordid history of being horrible on the environment by focusing having a minimal carbon footprint, sustainable farming, etc. Individual freedom is maximal, while personal possessions are minimal (in most cases). People typically work 5~6 hrs/day, usually get to choose when they work and what kind of work they will do, and get a little cash on the side, but everything else is supplied, including health care, education, room and board, etc. I reckon some of them hippies had brains, after all.
