Scariest Gaming Experience...?

Post by dj357 » Thu Feb 25, 2010 11:57 am

Feel free to share your scariest gaming experience from Alma appearing out of nowhere in F.E.A.R. to every single tense moment in the dark in each of the three S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

For me it's those two experiences plus the headcrabs in Half Life. Anything like that that jumps towards your head in a game freaks the crap out of me and makes my skin crawl. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are by far the most tense atmospheric games I've played in a long time, F.E.A.R. is a very jumpy kind of freaky like climbing a ladder to be faced with an apparition, whereas every moment in the dark with your feeble flashlight barely registering in the night in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and the howls of mutants in the distance is so horribly unnerving!

totally worth it though! :)

With out a doubt that honour of the most scary game goes to Doom. I don’t think any other game had players attempting to peer round the monitor to see where the noises were coming from.

Anything that uses a torch seems to be a short-cut to pant-wetting.

I remember being really scared by.. actually I don't know what game it was but it was on PS1 and have dinosaurs which jumped at you. Doom never seemed scary to me, although I wasn't allowed to play it as a kid so only ever watched other people play it, which is a different experience.

Oh, and the latest tomb raider was probably the one that most made me go SHIT SHIT SHIT! When big gorillas and tigers and stuff suddenly appear and run at you.

Dead space tried to be scary, but for some reason I just never felt that from it. You're line gun was so awesome that you just shot of the legs of whatever was scuttling towards you, job done.

Hmm.. yes, I thought Turok, but I'm not sure if it was. I was a kid, it was a while ago, and I'm fairly sure I got lent the game without a case! lol

oh yeah.... Doom... i totally forgot about that game.... creepy stuff, Turok was pretty creepy too... and System Shock 2 now that I think of it...

i found Turok 3 the scariest of the series as the graphics were the best and the lighting was darker than the others :P

I was going to mention Doom, but people have already, so I'll recount an old experience playing the first Thief game. I had carefully and patiently snuck into someone's castle ground, ascended a locked tower, and then leaped across a guard patrol path onto the balcony opposite -gaining me access to the castle. As I was rummaging around the room with the balcony I accidentally caused some noise - and heard the patrolling guards below stop their walking.

I thought the alarm would be raised, so I waited for a while, couldn't hear anything, and then padded toward the balcony to have a peer at what was going on. I didn't hear the guards mumbling about 'mysterious noses', so I assumed they had just gone on their way. As I turn around to walk back into the room an arrow flashes directly in front of my face and *thunks* into the wooden arch beside me. I literally jumped in my seat (the Thief games are usually quiet, as noise play a large part of the stealth aspect), as I transitioned from 'I'm completely hidden, and nobody knows I'm here' to 'That bugger was waiting for me!'

It was very surreal standing stock still, in game, from my real shock and just looking at the arrow lodged into the wooden plank right in front of my face.
