Obscure games that everyone should play

Post by Mahou » Wed Oct 27, 2010 4:30 pm

Here we post about obscure or forgotten games that are really good and everyone should play. Tell us about your favorite obscure games!

My first one is Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

Good dog I love this game. It's based off of White Wolf's tabletop game, Vampire: The Masquerade (who would have thought?) and takes place in their World of Darkness setting. It's masterfully written, incredibly atmospheric, and uses the Source engine so the lip synching and rag dolls are awesome.

You pick a vampire type, gender, background, and some stats, then are let loose on the streets of LA to deal with vampire society. You can focus on melee or shooting combat, or use lots of bloodline abilities to kill things with magic or avoid combat all together. There are multiple ways to get through most missions, from direct fighting, spellcasting, sneaking, or sometimes just talking your way out of situations. It's tons of fun. Plus, 5 endings.

Why you haven't heard of it:
Well, a couple of reasons. Due to development issues, it was never really play tested. As a result, it's buggy as all hell. There's a patch 1.2, but that really doesn't fix much. HOWEVER! There are unofficial, fan-made patches up to patch 7.1. These fix almost all the issues, though you sometimes still have some weird glitches.

It also doesn't help that, due to contractual obligations from using the Source engine, it was released on the exact same day as Half-Life 2. It was a little overshadowed.

Seriously, play it. It's 20 bucks on Steam and is well worth it.

Supaplex is a puzzle game which is a clone of Boulder Dash basically, made for MS-DOS and Amiga.

In a field resembling a circuit board you need to remove certain items by moving your pacman-like figure over them or picking them right next to you. If you remove them blocks or boulders fall down and they can trap you or crush you. The levels start quite easy but as it progresses it gets very difficult very fast.

A newer version of the game is called Igor - The Time Machine.

Play this with 7 people, preferably with drinks and cigars involved..... Image
Diplomacy is a strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 and released commercially in 1959.[1] Its main distinctions from most board wargames are its negotiation phases (players spend much of their time forming and betraying alliances with other players)[2] and the absence of dice or other game elements that produce random effects. Set in Europe just before the beginning of World War I, Diplomacy is played by two to seven players, each controlling the armed forces of a major European Power (or, with few players, multiple powers). Each player aims to move his or her few starting units—and defeat those of others—to win possession of a majority of strategic cities and provinces marked as "supply centers" on the map; these supply centers allow players who control them to produce more units.

Oh god, diplomacy. I managed to win that as Turkey by having a tenuous non-aggression pact with Austria-Hungary and by convincing Germany to pressure Russia. After a long time of steadily gaining power, I managed to take all of Russia in like 3 turns and most of Austria-Hungary.

BUT! This is the VIDEO GAMING forum. As much as drinking games and Diplomacy are awesome, I'd prefer to keep our focus on obscure video games. Otherwise I might need to rant about Dominion and Hey, That's My Fish.

Shove ha'penny. A fine diversion from the rigours of a classical education.

Oops!

Sorry...I saw the title "Obscure games..." and did not notice that it was in the "video gaming" category. My apologies.

I'd still like to gather 7 decent strategy gamers together and play a complete game of Diplomacy while sipping 18 year old Glenfidditch and smoking a Macanudo....

But I love it more!

Will contribute to this thread when I get home from work...
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

At some point later today, I'm going to have another game review up on that link I posted in post 1. I'm not sure what game it will be on though. Probably either Evil Genius or Gratuitous Space Battles, but maybe on Second Sight.

Also, I'm wondering if Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil are under appreciated enough to be considered obscure...
