If you need to cheat, that means you ought to do something else than play that game

Cheating, where there is a good prospect of getting away with it, is built in to our nature by natural selection as a useful potential strategy.

Of course, natural selection has also honed our Cheater detection systems - the usual evolutionary arms race occurs...

Over the summer Indian chess star and 5 time world champion Viswanathan Anand raised money for charity playing celebrities in a simul. One of the celebrities actually managed to win. Nikhil Kamath, India's youngest billionaire defeated Anand despite blundering a pawn on move 1.

Kamath later admitted to using a chess engine to help him win. --at.a.charity.event :fp:

Chess is a inflexible ancient game based on stereotypes of style and behaviour. Never played it seriously since a computer won without human input. Cheating is OK but must be regulated or it could become standard and law. So, it comes back to....who watches the watchmen. The real question is hard, might be there's a reason for that?

That's an interesting view of the game. To me chess is amusing in the same way any puzzle box might be: the more ingenious the mechanism which unlocks it, the more gratifying it is to find it. So, while a queen trapped in the corner is neat, the same piece unable to find safety from any of a dozen possible moves is evocative: white to move.

I must admit that while I admire the skill of good chess players, I have no enthusiasm for the game, because I myself am totally lacking in the necessary abilities, and am a sore loser to boot.

Oh well, I'm no good either and also just appreciate the games of really strong players, like the above position from Duda, Jan-Krzysztof (2801) vs. Nakamura, Hikaru (2836) 0-1 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals 2021.

Baseball, like NASCAR, is a special case in my opinion. Both have a venerable history of players and teams trimming as close as possible to the edge of 'unfair advantage' (and sometimes stepping right over the line) including many of the greats in both sports. Illustrative examples: Not even touching on the juicing in baseball in the early years of this century, see for instance Gaylord Perry. As for NASCAR, see Junior Johnson.

My favorite baseball cheat was Joe Niekro dropping his nail file.
