By the way, how do audible books compare to reading a book in terms of speed to finish so many pages?

They are much slower. I also had to work harder initially to maintain focus.

You can set the narrator speed in small increments ie 1.1x or .75 but really why is that an issue ? It's not a contest. I'll go on a 3-4 hour ride with an audio book running and be so engaged that I keep listening when I get home.
I think it is easier to "get lost" in an audio book than a read tho Norwegian Wood has me engaged. √

discovered something a bit perverse tonight. I never got into the TV series Game Of Thrones, but I've been a big George R.R. Martin fan from a long way back. While it wouldn't otherwise be a top pick, the GOT books when not purchased with credits are exorbitantly expensive. I may try to hammer down the GOT books in series using credits and then just pay for the less expensive titles that I want.
Try Chirp for deals without a credit system.

Buying a years supply of credits makes Audible far less expensive and an audiobook s a very different experience than reading.

This is a good deal.

can't say on this - might be some deals

I picked up my first book on Chirp. (Thanks for the link!) Heinlein's Stranger In A Strange Land was $5 on Chirp. And I discovered that Iris Chang's The Rape Of Nanking was free with Audible. I'm still sampling the waters, but I think audible books are going to be a good thing for me.

Stranger feels dated but worth while. For $5 I might grab it - books are different when read.- Hey I'm listening to 1984v :?
...Nanking was mmmm about as horrendous as it gets but well written and evocative.
There is a fair bit here https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/genres/2/adventure/ ...and FREE!!!!

I used to love listening to radio plays from the BBC on headphones and get completely lost in them. Might see what of that genre is available. Some of the eBooks are done with a full cast of voices. I might grab a long one as I still have a lot of books to buy in the next couple of days...strange hardship. :ask:

The comments are interesting.

You might like Bujold....her Vorkosigan Saga series is in the same headspace but she's the better writer ( which is a real accomplishment ) Very memorable characters and lots of books.
Triple Hugo winner and a Nebula all for best novel and double Hugo winner for best series. Girl is good.

Ohh like the narrator on Patrick O'Brians Aubrey Maturin series...that's 21 books so it's my fall back.
I learned a lot about the British Navy and politics of the era on a British Empire scale. He writes enough in the vernacular of the time and feels authentic...tremendously researched.

I'm trying to contain myself a bit. I tend to be a bit of a compulsive shopper, which is one side of my hoarding disorder. If I let myself, I'd just go wild. However, in looking for a copy of the bible in a translation that I like for free, I came across The One Year Chronological Bible NLT. At only $6, it's the perfect way for me to start on the bible, which I've never read. But now that I've set myself a year-long task in learning the bible, it occurred to me that Isaac Asimov's book set on the bible would make a perfect companion. Alas, it doesn't look to be available in audible form. So, I'm looking at dead tree copies. It's not expensive, but this could very well end up being a case of a death from a thousand cuts.

Ed Yong’s “An Immense World” is very good, at least on ink-stained tree slices. Don’t know about the audio book.

Haruki Murakami
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
Killing Commendatore
Kafka on the Shore
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

Down to 8 credits. Figured better for the author that I don't know but like rather than O'Brian who I love but have in both book and eBooks format already.

BTW any scifi fans who have not read the Boboverse novels are missing out big time. Partner is fussy and she adores them ....much laughter and wonderful imagination.
